Scottish Moth Species Counts

This page shows maps showing the number of macro moth species recorded at both vice county level and at 10 km square level for Scotland from National Moth Recording Scheme database (as at December 2010) run by Butterfly Conservation.  Accompanying the species counts are maps showing an indication of the number of recording sessions.  A recording session is defined as a unique combination of date, 2km square and observer.

Moth counts where the recording sessions are not in the highest category will rise over time as more effort is put in.  For those with the lowest session count categories the moth count figures are significant underestimates.  Over 10% of the 593 species in the database for Scotland have less than three individuals recorded.
