Clais Fhearnaig

From Braemar take the Linn of Dee road to Glen Quoich. NO118912 (43).

Walk c.5km up Glen and take track left to NO069934 .

Pearl-bordered Fritillary (unusual, bracken-free site on south facing slopes).

Morrone Birkwood, Linn of Dee

From Braemar take road to Linn of Dee and turn left up one-way road at "Taste" restaurant for c. half a mile. NO143910 (43)

Use car park on left by duck pond. Waymarked paths start nearby.

All three fritillaries, Northern Brown Argus, Common Blue & Small Heath.

Cambus O'May

From Ballater take A93 4 miles towards Aberdeen to Cambus O'May bridge car park. NO422975 (37/44)

From old station house below car park, follow riverbank path downstream on Deeside Way (old railway line) to Dinnet. Can also walk from Ballater or Dinnet on Deeside Way.

Variety, including all three fritillaries, Scotch Argus and Ringlet.

Loch of Aboyne

From Aboyne take A93. 1 mile towards Aberdeen. Layby at Lodge on the Loch sign or patrons may park at lodge. NO539998 (37)

Take track to Lodge, then path on north side of loch & explore area between golf courses or join waymarked route to Mortlich hill. Can also walk from Aboyne via old railway line and/or golf course.

Variety, including all three fritillaries, Northern Brown Argus and Orange-tip.

Glendoll Forest West Loop

From Kirriemuir follow the B955 to Clova and turn left to Glen Doll. NO285761 (44)

Use Forestry Commission car park at the end of the road.

Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Dark Green Fritillary, Ringlet.

Lower Glen Clova

Take B955 from Kirriemuir and turn off on the B956 road to Rotal. NO353715 (44)

Pull off road by plantation after Adielinn Cottage.

Northern Brown Argus (less than 50m from road between plantation and birch woodland).

Borders

The Bell and Killmade Burn

Take B6369 from A1 at Haddington to Gifford and then B6355 East to Whiteadder Reservoir (NT666633).

A picnic area is just past the reservoir if you are coming from the Edinburgh/Gifford direction (or just before, if you are coming from  the Chirnside/Duns direction along the B6355). Northern Brown Argus can be seen sporadically along the roadside verge nectaring on flowers such as thyme.

There is a colony of Dark Green Fritillaries along Killmade Burn which runs into the burn issuing from the reservoir (Whiteadder Water) opposite the picnic area. However, this species is very mobile and can often be seen nectaring on the roadside flowers at peak emergence.

Perthshire

Linn of Tummel

2 miles north west of Pitlochry on B8019. Garry Bridge Car Park. NN913610 (43).

Follow path to where the Tummel and Garry meet. Walk up the Tummel for 10 mins, through deer gate.

Pearl-bordered Fritillary (look under power line at NN905603) and other woodland species.

Jubilee Rifle Range

From Blair Atholl take the minor road north to Old Bridge of Tilt, turn left under bridge - Glen Tilt car park is c.100m on left. NN874663 (43).

Walk 2 miles via Old Blair and Blairuachdar.

Variety including Orange-tip and Dark Green Fritillary. Possibly Northern Brown Argus.

Craigower Hill

From Pitlochry take the A924 to Moulin. Turn left just after the Moulin Inn to the golf course to small parking area. NN937593 (43 & 52).

Take path to north of golf course and follow steep, clearly-marked path. Alternatively park at Moulin and walk from there.

10 species recorded including Scotch Argus, Green Hairstreak and all three fritillaries.

Ben Vrackie

From Pitlochry take the A924 to Moulin. Turn left just after the Moulin Inn, then immediately right to car park, c. 500m on right. NN943597 (43 & 52).

Follow well-signed path up mountain (peak at NN950632).

Woodland and heathland species including Scotch Argus, Small Heath and Dark Green Fritillary.

West Lothian

Westrigg Bing

The entrance is off the B718 Harthill to Blackridge Road, opposite Station Road (NS900667).

On entering the bing, follow the cycleway/ footpath round to the right. This takes you past some marshy areas on your right where Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries can sometimes be seen. They are, however, more usually seen at the far end of the site where large reeds grow in standing water. Here the footpath starts to loop left round the end of the site at approximately NS909669.
